A high-performance habit system for busy professionals who want more energy, less burnout, and a greater sense of control.

By Design Not Default

The book is a practical guide to building the kind of habits, routines, and mindset that help you stay energised, focused, and in control, even when you're living a busy life with competing priorities.

This is a book for people with full, demanding lives. People who are doing their best to hold things together, succeeding in some areas of life but often coming last on their own list of priorities.

You already know how to deliver under pressure, going above and beyond expectations without anybody having to ask, and always finding a way to keep going even when you know the pace isn’t sustainable.

Everyone sees the version of you that’s composed and productive, but just under the surface there’s a cost.

You power through a non-stop day that leaves people wondering how on earth you do it. But when you finally stop and there’s nothing left in the tank for your family, your hobbies, or just a quiet moment with your own thoughts. You don’t feel quite as capable as you look.

You feel older than you should, tired, and maybe even a little resentful that you’re always giving your best to everything else while what matters most gets whatever’s left.

Many of the clients that I work with as a performance coach already know what would help them feel better, and I’m guessing you do too. Decent sleep, more movement, good nutrition… you know the basics and the Internet is there to fill in the gaps, but information without implementation makes no difference.

What makes this so frustrating is that you can be incredibly disciplined at work, with hitting deadlines, leading teams and solving problems. You’ve already built the systems and behaviours that help you get results and perform effectively so why is it so hard to do the same for yourself?

"I know what to do... but I just don't do it!"

Work runs on essential effort.

You don’t just act because you’re always deeply motivated, but because the expectations, consequences, and structures are clear. You know what needs doing, and you can do it even on the days you don’t feel like it.

You have well designed systems that support success whereas your personal habits rely on discretionary effort. This is the time, energy and attention you choose to give when no one’s watching. There’s no looming deadline for choosing a healthy lunch, your phone won’t get confiscated if you’re still on it past 9pm, and nobody’s banging on your door if you skip your workout.

And when effort is discretionary, there’s usually an easier default option not too far away which is why you end up saying to yourself "I know what to do... but I just don't do it!"

In this book I am going to teach you how to design and build sustainable systems that fuel your energy, support your wellbeing, and elevate your performance without needing a complete life overhaul, a 5am bootcamp or David Goggins levels of self-discipline.

A system that works in real life

This book introduces The Energy Boost system - a structured yet adaptable approach grounded in behavioural science and designed for professionals in high-pressure environments. It gives you the tools to:

  • Design flexible systems that help you stay consistent even when your schedule changes

  • Integrate energy-boosting strategies that have an immediate impact on resilience, mindset and focus, so you don’t have to choose between work commitments and personal wellbeing

  • Understand and overcome self-sabotage so you can stay on track without relying on willpower and motivation alone

  • Find true work / life balance, not just with your time but with your energy and attention

  • Build habit resilience so you can bounce back quickly after disruptions

  • Evolve your designed systems over time so you can smoothly transition from start to sustain

With over 20 tools, trackers, and frameworks, including the Effort-Impact Matrix, Momentum Tracker, and Energy Upgrade Map, you’ll go beyond inspiration into implementation. It’s not about adding more pressure or chasing perfection, but about building habits and systems that genuinely fit your life.

If you’ve struggled to stay consistent with your habits in the past, or if you feel like your energy never quite matches your potential, this book is for you. The advice contained in these pages is about building the kind of energy that helps you elevate your performance at work and have the energy left to excel in all the domains in your life.
